In today’s world, when disasters such as hurricanes, floods, fires and earthquakes seem almost commonplace, it’s smart to be prepared. Disaster preparedness doesn’t have to be scary or crazy–the smart thing is just to be aware of your surroundings and apply your common sense when {and if} disaster strikes. With that in mind, here are 10 tips that might save your life one day.
1.In case of emergency, it is good to know that there are a few ways to filter your water and make it safe for drinking. One way is to make your own DIY filter from charcoal and two alternating layers of clean sand and pebbles.
2. What if you are ever lost but you don’t have a compass? Use the sun and an analog watch to help you figure out which way is north.
3. Hand sanitizer is flammable and can be used in a pinch to help you start a fire.
4. You can make water from trees. All you need is a plastic bag wrapped around a branch to trap condensation caused when the sun warms up the inside of the bag.
5. Stick a few tampons inside your first aid kit. They are extremely absorbent and will absorb a lot of moisture in case of a deep or puncture wound.
6. Familiarize yourself with how to build a basic lean-to shelter. Pine boughs are perfect to help keep you warm and dry, and pine needles make great insulation on the ground and will help you stay warm while you sleep.
7. If you’ve got a soda can and a chocolate bar, you can literally use these two things to make a fire. {Sounds crazy but it’s true!} See Wild Wood Survival for the details.
8. Smoke signals were one of the earliest means of communication between humans. They still have value today, particularly in an emergency. Here’s how to make a smoke signal.
9. Learn about wild plants and their medicinal properties. For example, acorns can be made into a tea that will soothe gastrointestinal issues.
10. Always include duct tape in your camping, hunting and survival gear. It has so many uses that it’s a definite plus to keep some around! It will help protect blisters, fix gear, and mend tents, just to name a few.
